Scents and wellbeing

Scents can improve people’s sense of well-being.

Fragrances can improve people’s sense of well-being and their self-esteem. Even just the act of choosing a scent, applying it, and
savouring its aroma can be an important self-care routine and ritual, helping people feel more grounded and more confident. Our sense of smell is also closely linked to the brain’s limbic system, which is responsible for regulating emotions, memories, and behaviours, as well as processing information related to scent. So a particular scent can evoke a powerful memory, a sense of nostalgia, or lift our mood. No wonder, then, that so many brands are developing fragrances as a tool for wellness.
The ingredients we use within perfumes may also have specific therapeutic properties, which can support our mental health and well-being. This is what lies behind aromatherapy, whose history can be traced back thousands of years and across different cultures. Aromatherapy is a holistic healing practice that utilises aromatic plant extracts, known as essential oils, to promote physical, emotional, and psychological well-being. It involves the inhalation, topical application, or sometimes internal use of these concentrated plant essences to harness their therapeutic properties.
