The company's founder, Raphael Bordallo (1846-1905), was an artist and subversive socialist who liked to poke fun at late 19th Century Portuguese society.

A sculptor, interior designer and publisher of satirical newspapers, his dream was to elevate everyday tableware to the standards of porcelain pieces, at the time the preserve of the upper classes.
