In the 1850s, after much experimental blending, a distinctive black rum was offered for sale. Smooth and flavourful, at first it was simply called "Old Rum" and until the First World War, it was sold straight from the barrel. Eventually it was sold in Champagne bottles from Naval officer's Mess with corks 'sealed' in black wax.
