Introduction about the brand

2019 is very special year for Gibsons as they have been trading as a British, family run business for 100 years.

In 1903 the company founder, Harry Percy Gibson, obtained an unsecured loan of £500 and launched H P Gibson & Sons Ltd. Originally, their name was made with the ‘HPG’ brand of indoor games such as L’Attaque and Dover Patrol, which were huge sellers before and after the Second World War. They went on to launch jigsaw puzzles in the 1980s and the business has grown from strength to strength ever since.

The company entered its fourth generation in 2016 when its founder’s great-granddaughters, Kate Gibson and Nicki Gumbrell, stepped up to become Gibsons’ Managing Director and Sales Director.
Kate says ‘We are extremely fortunate to have such a strong heritage; it is a big part of who we are today. Behind Gibsons is a strong and supportive team, many of whom have been a part of our company for decades and are the reason for our success.’

What are your top products this year/set for 2020?

We were thrilled to win two Gift of the Year Awards in February. Our Sweet Memories Tins were Winner of the Commemorative and Collectable Award. These 500 piece puzzles capture everyone’s favourite sweets from the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s in an eye-catching montage and are presented in fun, reusable gift tins. The second award was for the Festive category and was received for our Christmas Countdown Calendar, 12 Days of Christmas. The first ever jigsaw puzzle advent calendar on the market, 12 Days of Christmas, holds twelve festive 80 piece puzzles, one hidden behind each door. We will be revealing a brand new design, Christmas is Coming, at this year’s Home & Gift Show.
In January we released over 40 new classic jigsaw puzzle designs that are available in an array of piece counts, from 100 to 2000 pieces. Amongst the new releases are two centenary themed puzzles including a specially commissioned Steve Crisp design, A Work of Art, which has been one of our best sellers. Like all our puzzles, the new releases are made from the highest quality 100% recycled board. What’s more, we have the thickest 1000 piece jigsaw puzzles on the UK market, making them a pleasure to work with again and again.
This year we also introduced a range of special edition 1000 piece puzzles that are made in the UK and are presented in compact boxes to avoid excess waste. In addition, we have used paper tabs instead of plastic wrap to hold the box together, making our puzzles kinder to the environment by reducing excess plastic waste. These are changes that have been well received by our customers and it is a project that we are looking to expand across our entire puzzle range in our bid to be as green as we can be.

Could you tell us about your latest collections/ranges?

In January we released our White Logo Collection, a range of exciting design-led jigsaw puzzles. There are six quirky designs available including Avocado Park, a pear-fect 1000 piece puzzle that is filled to the brim with avo-people doing avo-cardio, chilling with their avo-dogs… and even some avo-cars! Like our special edition 1000 piece puzzles, we have presented them in smaller boxes and shrink wrap has been lost to avoid excess plastic waste. Designed and manufactured in the UK, the collection complements the mindfulness movement as puzzling reduces stress by occupying and engaging the mind.
We also launched a brand new children’s range, Little Gibsons. Three puzzles were released in January, all of which have been tailor-made for inquisitive pre-schoolers thanks to their bright, quirky packaging and on-trend themes. Each jigsaw has been designed by a British artist and is presented in an innovative box that links to the artwork theme. For example, 36-piece puzzle Camp Gibsons is the first ever puzzle to be presented in a tent shaped box, which complements the explorative treasure map puzzle that’s inside. A further two puzzles and games are being released in August and September and will be on display at the Home & Gift show!
We are expanding our range of gift puzzles for 2020, in particular our White Logo and our Christmas range. Our product development team have worked extremely hard to develop original Christmas ranges for 2018 and 2019, both of which have received positive reactions from our customers. It is therefore important for us to continue to be creative and bring an even better range for 2020.

What makes your company stand out from the rest?

We are extremely fortunate to have such a strong heritage; it is a big part of who we are today. Behind Gibsons is a strong and supportive team, many of whom have been a part of our company for decades and are the reason for our success. ‘Bringing people together’ underpins everything we do: from encouraging people to play games, creating a happy working culture, to supporting a local children’s charity and valuing the relationships with our suppliers and customers.
Everyone at Gibsons is encouraged to focus on solutions, to be the best we can be and never settle for something just because it has always been that way. We have 100 years of experience, but we will never stop learning. We were delighted that, based on rate of sale, we were the UK’s best performing manufacturer in adult puzzles for the whole of 2018*.

What can we expect from you at Home & Gift 2019?

This year at the Home & Gift show we have an extra-special centenary stand design. We will also have our exciting new range of Christmas gift products on display, including our second Christmas jigsaw puzzle calendar and bauble, and the latest additions to our Little Gibsons range. Not to forget our centenary edition of one of our original and most loved board games from the 1920s, L’Attaque. We have released an extra-special copy of L’Attaque to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Gibsons. Originally marketed as the 'game to rival chess', L'Attaque was the first of the 'big four' military-themed, strategy-based games from Gibsons, and was even enjoyed by Winston Churchill!
