Behind The Brand - Orla Kiely

Orla Kiely

Introduction about the brand
Orla Kiely OBE founded her business in 1995 to realise her dream of bringing modern mid century inspired pattern, a hint of 1960’s cool and the comforting nostalgia for the time into everyday 21st century life. Based on her threee deep rooted passions of colour, pattern and good design, the personality and creative mark of the brand were rooted, following the simple philosophy that the fun, bold and graphic style Orla so adores, can bring joy and smiles to many.
These strong, minimalised patterns became the signature and it was through a small range of practical and eye catching bags designed with functionality in mind that style was established. Since then, the collections have grown, full of print and colour, always playful in approach and often with a sense of humour integral to Orla’s style. Everyday elements such as flowers, plant life, animals, cutlery and crockery are refined into simple motifs before being constructed into the very orderly and rhythmic repeats that allows the charm and personality to shine.

What are your top products this year?
This year Orla’s 2019 washbag collection reaches dizzy new heights with a specially curated selection of prints. From the original iconic Stem print to the fresh and bold colours of the new Dove and Scallop Flower designs, there is a bag in this season’s collection for everyone.

Featured as part of Orla’s recent exhibition at the Fashion & Textiles Museum, her much loved Stem print is now one of the most recognisable motifs of 21st century fashion. It was first introduced back in the 1990s and since then it has been used as the logo for her global lifestyle empire and featured across everything from stationary and homeware to dresses and even cars. So now loyal fans of the brand can finally extend their collection of the Stem Print onto bathroom shelves, while others have the opportunity to buy into the unique print collections they aspire to.

Dove is a relatively new design for Orla Kiely and the bold print teams bright accents of persimmon with charcoal navy and pale rose. While Scallop Flower is a multi directional floral design which uses interlocking flowers and spots in a refreshing colour palette of duck egg blue teamed with seagrass green and navy. The wash bag collection includes everything from small cosmetics bags and medium sized wash bags to a train case and large hanging wash bag design. Each collection is beautifully made, using leather zips and 100% cotton canvas, paying careful attention to detail. Orla’s wash bag collection offers the perfect accessories to travel in style.

Could you tell us about your latest collections / ranges?
Orla’s stunning home fragrance collection was first introduced eight years ago, each beautifully adorned with a statement Orla Kiely print.  Her current collection of candles and diffusers use the finest natural essential oils and are available in four unique fragrances; Fig Tree, Earl Grey, Geranium and Lavender.
Each fragrance has been developed by an expert fragrance ‘nose’ in conjunction with Orla herself and was meticulously chosen to reflect different moods and emotions that people might have throughout the home.
The candles are made of a natural blend wax with a burn time of up to 50 hours while the reed diffusers are a simple and stylish way to scent a room for up to three months.

What makes your brand stand out from the rest?
Instead of following the latest trends, Orla is confident in her own designs. Her distinctive use of colour combined with her exclusive prints keeps her whole brand very unique and iconic, as well as being instantly recognisable. As a global lifestyle brand, her collections inspire and resonate with women around the world, not just in the UK. Orla also delivers high quality products with strong attention to detail.

What can we expect from you at Home & Gift 2019?
As well as showcasing the new wash bag collection, we’ll also be presenting some new home fragrance gifts, ideal for Christmas. The three gifts include the Acorn Mosaic Mini Diffuser Gift, the Square Flower Mini Candle Gift and the Acorn Cup Fig Tree Mini Home Fragrance set.

Check out the latest Orla Kiely home fragrance and wash bag collections at the KMI Brands stand at Home & Gift 2019 (stand number DP2-7).
