BEHIND THE BRAND THE NORTHEN LINE

Can you give an introduction to who you are and who/what your brand is and how long your brand has been around for? Is this your first Home & Gift?

The Northern Line are a retail and wholesale business based in The Lake District. TNL started life 7 years ago as an independent retailer of homeware, gifts & art. Over time we have developed a large range of best-selling contemporary prints, focusing on music, places/locations, sport and cycling which we are delighted to also offer on wholesale terms.

How did you start your brand? (Include where the idea come from and who/what was your inspiration, who helped you along the way etc.)

The founders of The Northern Line, Don & Sarah successfully ran a graphic design agency for many years, working mainly within sport and leisure. A lifelong dream of moving to The Lake District allowed Don & Sarah the time to also begin the journey of The Northern Line, where they quickly discovered a passion for producing fun and contemporary graphic art, available at affordable prices. With a focus on designing ideas around the Lake District, sport, in particular cycling, music and culture, they also design for other locations around the UK and beyond. Their son, Jacob joined the team after completing his degree, and now manages the online and wholesale divisions of the business. TNL is truly an independent, family-owned business, and the team love what they do!

What’s been your biggest highlight whilst creating your brand? Why is it you love what you do?

The biggest highlight has always been the thrill of designing artwork that people want to put on their walls! This remains at the core of our drive and enthusiasm for bringing fresh ideas to our customers. Nothing and no one ever stands still at The Northern Line! We believe that it’s a great time to be independent and we can offer our customers something different and tailored to their local needs if required.

Knowing what you do now, what advice would you give to yourself when you were first starting out? (e.g. any struggles and how you overcame them)

Be confident. We are still learning now, and we feel that’s nothing to be scared of. There are always challenges in running a growing business, but that’s part of what keeps it fresh and exciting. We’ve always believed in great customer service and communications, and that is very much part of our brand ethos.

Can you tell us about your new collections/ranges that you’ll be launching at Home & Gift? (include any events you’ll arrange onsite if applicable)

It’s our first time exhibiting at H&G and we are excited to show off the range of artwork that we feel is a great addition to retail stores. Some of our ranges can be personalized to suit a customer’s location, or style, like our city maps. It’s going to be great to meet prospective customers and talk to them about their requirements. It’s good to chat.

Any personal favourites from your new collection?

We really like the new city map prints. They’re bright and colourful and really add a splash of something different to your wall.
